मीरा हमेशा से अपने छोटे से कस्बे की सबसे हँसमुख लड़की मानी जाती थी। उसके चेहरे की मुस्कान मानो किसी भी उदासी को हराने की ताकत रखती थी। लोग कहते थे, “मीरा की मुस्कान में जादू है।”
लेकिन एक दिन वो जादू जैसे कहीं खो गया…

मीरा की दुनिया उसकी माँ थी। वही उसकी सहेली, उसका सहारा, उसका सब कुछ। माँ अपने हाथों से उसके लिए चूड़ियाँ चुनती, सुबह उसके बाल बनाती और रात को कहानियाँ सुनाती। पर बीमारी ने माँ को धीरे-धीरे कमजोर कर दिया। मीरा रात-रात भर माँ के पास बैठी रहती, आँसू पोंछकर कहती—
“माँ, आप ठीक हो जाओगी ना? हम फिर मेला चलेंगे ना?”
माँ बस हल्की सी मुस्कान देकर उसका हाथ पकड़ लेती।

एक सुबह अस्पताल के कमरे में चुप्पी थी। नर्सों की भागदौड़ थी, डॉक्टरों की निगाहों में निराशा थी। मीरा ने माँ का चेहरा देखा… पर इस बार माँ की मुस्कान बिल्कुल शांत थी—और स्थिर। मीरा ने जितना जोर से हो सकता था रोकर माँ को हिलाया, पर वो वापस नहीं लौटी।
