अर्जुन ने जब गहरे दुःख और भ्रम में श्रीकृष्ण से पूछा कि
“हे माधव, जब मृत्यु तो सबको ही आनी है, तो फिर भक्ति का क्या लाभ?”
तब कृष्ण मुस्कुराकर जीवन का सबसे गहरा सत्य बताते हैं।
कृष्ण समझाते हैं कि मृत्यु तो सभी के लिए समान है,
परंतु अंतर इस बात का है कि अंतिम क्षण किसकी शरण में बीतते हैं।
जैसे एक बिल्ली अपने बच्चे को मुँह से उठाती है तो उसे अपार सुरक्षा और कोमलता मिलती है,
लेकिन वही बिल्ली जब किसी चूहे को पकड़ती है,
तो वही दाँत उसके लिए मृत्यु बन जाते हैं।
संबंध एक ही—पर परिणाम बिल्कुल अलग।
इसी प्रकार, जीवन और मृत्यु का चक्र सबके लिए निश्चित है,
लेकिन जो प्राणी प्रेम, श्रद्धा और भक्ति से भगवान की शरण में रहता है,
उसे मृत्यु के पार भी परम शांति और दिव्य धाम की प्राप्ति होती है।
और जो ईश्वर से दूर रहता है, वह जन्म–मरण के अंतहीन चक्र में भटकता रहता है।
